Skills Centre

Teaching skills for an evolving country

“I want to find employment, or begin self employment, so I can look after myself, my family and my country”

The Family Pillars Vocational and Skills Centre is an inclusive part of the whole school campus, with the Skills Centre Manager accountable to the Headteacher, and a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

Up to 400 young people a year can get free training on an accredited course for 8 months, and for the vast majority of trainees who graduate, the local economy benefits by having qualified electricians, plumbers, metal fabricators, carpenters, bricklayers/plasterers, tailors, or computer/office workers. (The centre is TEVETA accredited - approved government training schemes similar to NVQ - and highly regarded, meaning that trainees get a nationally recognised qualification giving them an advantage in the workplace and an entry into further training if they so wish.)

The Family Pillars Vocational and Skills Centre is one of the final launchpads to project the vulnerable children and young people supported by Future Pillars out of poverty by training them in a marketable skill to provide the basis for a long-term sustainable future for themselves and their families.

Some graduates work independently in the booming construction industry or from home, others form small cooperative groups and some go into paid employment or further training. A real success story!

In order to sustain the courses and due to their popularity, some fee-paying students are also enrolled at various levels – from 3 month evening classes for local working people to one-year advanced courses, all helping people in what is a poor and deprived area to better themselves.

Courses covered include carpentry, entrepreneurship, tailoring, construction, electrics, plumbing, metal fabrication, computing and many more.

Please get in touch if you have any of these skills and you would like to link with students in Zambia:
